VAMPIRES
Vampires are regarded as one of the most dangerous species of the entire world, immortality making them impossible to defeat. All vampires have a thirst for blood, and must feed about once every week. If they don't they become incredibly weak, and eventually they will die. However, vampires that are born from a vampire couple are able to survive on human food as well as blood. Just like the stereotypical vampire lore suggests, they have fangs. These are hidden unless they're feeding or showing them off. All vampires eyes turn red when feeding.
Vampires have enhanced senses: they're also incredibly fast and unbelievably strong. A vampire could crumble a boulder to pieces with one hand. Unlike Meyer's vampires, these creatures do not sparkle in the sun. They burn. A full vampire can only last an hour or two out in the sun before they receive severe burns and eventually die. Born vampires are able to stay out in the sun for as long as they wish (until they stop growing) without any affect. Yet unlike humans, they will not tan. Vampires have impossibly pale skin. Contrary to popular myth, they are unable to turn into bats or any other creature (unless they're a hybrid.)
There are three different types of vampire: made, born and vegetarian. Made vampires are those that have been turned by another. They will stay frozen at whatever age they were bitten, and will be unable to grow older. Made vampires are the most common type, and usually they're never older than twenty. However, you'll have the rare cases of vampires that were turned at an old age. Vegetarian vampires are those that have abstained from human blood for an incredibly long time, thus adapting to a life without it. Vegetarian vampires are rare as it takes decades to slowly mutate into needing no human blood. These vampires have the same abilities as normal ones.
Both made and vegetarian vampires are able to have children, but it's hard for a vampire couple to conceive. Usually they'll only have one or two children within a lifetime before finding they're infertile. This is what has stopped the vampires taking over. These children will age normally, just like any other human but they are able to stop their growth at anytime. Usually born vampires wait until their late teens to stop their growth. Once it's stopped, they're unable to age anymore. However, when a born vampire reaches the age of around twenty two, they stop growing automatically. Born vampires are able to survive on both human food and blood, and until they stop growing they're able to be out in the sun.
SHAPESHIFTERS
The shapeshifters are one of the most common types of species other than humans. Shapeshifters are able to change into one animal, and once in that form they have the abilities that particular animal would have. The most common form among the shapeshifters is a wolf or leopard, but they are many others. Although werewolves do exist, they are no way related to the shapeshifters and are unable to pass their genes along to one.
It's common for shapeshifter children to either have two shapeshifter parents or one human and one shapeshifter. However, they are not considered hybrids if they have a human parent usually because they'd be human themselves if it wasn't for the shapeshifting gene. There have been rare cases of shapeshifters born to human families who have no records of mythical beings in the family tree. A child will first show the form it can change into at about the age of three. It takes a lot of training and control to stop phasing at random times. Shapeshifters age like humans and die at old ages. The only extra thing about shapeshifters is their extraordinary healing ability: they are able to heal quicker than any other species.
WITCHES
Witches are one of the rarer species in the word, purely because of their stubborn beliefs of marrying only witches. All myths of witches being cackling old women who ride on brooms are just that: myths. Witches can be either male or female, and age normally. Witches have an extended lifetime and are able to live up until the age of two hundred. They will not look over fifty until they hit the one hundred mark, and will start ageing rapidly.
The bloodlines of Witches is usually pure as they have strong beliefs of only marrying a fellow witch. This continuous belief has started to reduce the species, and only in the last two decades have Witches began marrying humans. Half-witches are not regarded as hybrids or human, but seem to have weaker powers compared to a full Witch. All Witches are able to make spells and potions with ingredients, but they're nothing like the stories. Witches specialize in one element the most: either water, earth, air or fire. They are able to control and wield the one element they specialize in.
HUMANS
The humans that attend Bloomfield Academy are just people with extraordinary gifts. These 'gifted humans' (as they've been dubbed) usually come from either normal human families, or families that had a mythical creature in the bloodline hundreds of years before. You'll also find children of gifted couples who've married.
Gifted humans can have up to two gifts that they have complete control of. This can range from simple enhanced strength to strong telepathy. Gifted humans have a normal lifespan as normal ones, but it's been found that they live a decade or more longer. Gifted humans are the more common species after the shapeshifters.
HYBRIDS
The hybrids of the mythical world are extremely common. Hybrids can be born from any mixture of couple, and will inherit genes from both parents. The only rare occurrence is a child born from a vampire and human/gifted human. For some strange reason vampires find it hard to have children with them. However, vampires are able to have children with shapeshifters and witches fine.
The only two mixtures that are not considered hybrids are those born from a human & witch and a human & shapeshifter. Those born from a GIFTED human and another species are still considered hybrids. Not one hybrid has the same powers as another: they're all unique in their own way. The birth of hybrids has not become accepted until the last fifty years or so. Before that they were shunned, and were forced to hide a few of their powers to be accepted into society. This list was thought completely off of the top of my head, so if you see something you recognize from a series, credit goes to that author/creator.
